It has been a couple of months since you last heard from Arugula Books. In that time, I’ve acquired new and lovely books that I look forward to sharing with you. In honor of spring and the leafing out and flowering of trees and shrubs (seemingly overnight), you will find even more gardening and natural history books, including volumes on backyard gardening, gardening memoirs, flower arranging, native plants, and more. I also greatly expanded the poetry section because we all need more poetry in our lives. Right? This Sunday, Arugula Books will be at the Providence Flea: 10:00-4:00, across from 345 Water Street in Providence. The first outdoor flea of the season!
Lilacs by Amy Lowell (an excerpt)
Lilacs,
False blue,
White,
Purple,
Color of lilac,
Your great puffs of flowers
Are everywhere in this my New England.
Among your heart-shaped leaves
Orange orioles hop like music-box birds and sing
Their little weak soft songs;
In the crooks of your branches
The bright eyes of song sparrows sitting on spotted eggs
Peer restlessly through the light and shadow
Of all Springs.
Lilacs in dooryards
Holding quiet conversations with an early moon;
Lilacs watching a deserted house
Settling sideways into the grass of an old road;
Lilacs, wind-beaten, staggering under a lopsided shock of bloom
Above a cellar dug into a hill.
You are everywhere.
